story Yanmah Ridge wines represent the enterprise of the Nicholas family. Established in 1987 the Yanmah Ridge Vineyard is situated in one of the oldest known land regions in the world, and area full of ancient myth and legend. It is located in the Manjimup Wine Region where the conditions are perfect for quality grapegrowing. Set on red gravelly loams, in the midst of the magnificent temperate rainforests in the southwest of Western Australia. Yanmah Ridge vineyards are unique in that they were the first and possibly only vineyard to be established in Western Australia based purely on an in depth study to find the perfect location for grape growing in the southwest of Western Australia. In 1985, as a requirement to complete his winemaking qualification at Roseworthy Agricultural College in South Australia, Peter Nicholas undertook a project to examine the most ideal wine-grape growing region in Western Australia. The only criteria were to find the best climate and soils, regardless of previous grapegrowing history or reputation, and based on the world’s top quality regions. The end result pointed to and area around the town of Manjimup in the Western Australia’s southwest. This area was found to be the coolest growing region in Western Australia with high elevation, red gravel soils, pure water and perfect sunshine hours. After touring the shire of Manjimup in 1985, the perfect location was selected in 1986 and the first 8 hectares were planted in 1987 and Yanmah Ridge was born. Yanmah Ridge Vineyard was the first commercial vineyard in what is now the Manjimup Wine Region. |
